  • Research Interests: the cultural-intellectual history of technology, engineering studies, the practices and values of design. He is writing a book titled \"Engineers for Change: Ideology, Engineering Culture, and the Crisis of Technology in 1960s America\" that explores engineers\' participation in the culture wars of the 1960s and its consequences on how we understand technology today. Matt received his bachelor\'s degree in Materials Science & Engineering in 2000 and his PhD in History in 2005. He comes to Virginia Tech most recently from a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Modeling Interdisciplinary Inquiry Program at Washington University in St. Louis. His recent course offerings include graduate seminars in Design Cultures and Normative Visions of Technology as well as undergraduate classes in the history of technology and material culture studies.
