Assessment of Students' Progress
The Graduate Committee will request from each instructor upon completion of a course an assessment of each STS student's performance. The Committee will provide instructors with forms to be used for this assessment. The assessments will be used for the yearly review of student progress as well as for decisions concerning admissions to the Ph.D. program. Progress toward the degree is assessed in part in relation to the "ideal schedule" found below. With regard to continuation of Graduate Assistantships, the student's performance will be evaluated on the basis of their performance in courses, statements by the supervisors for their assistantship, and review by the student's advisory committee. Continued support requires satisfactory performance and is subject to the availability of funds. So far as possible, continuing students will not be placed in competition for support with entering students.
The STS program offers a maximum of two years of support for M.S. studies, 3 years of support for Ph.D. studies of students who earned MS degrees in STS, and 4 years of Ph.D. support for students who earned MS degrees in other programs. We note, however, that funding is not a right and that our ability to fund even those students who are progressing well toward their degrees is subject to contingencies beyond our control.
